What press-on nails actually are (and what they are not)
A press-on nail is a ready-made nail that you fix over your own with nail glue, sticky tabs or an adhesive already on the back of the nail. There is no UV lamp, no drill and no salon visit. You choose a size for each finger, press it on, and take it off by soaking or peeling, depending on the adhesive.
They are not acrylics, which a technician builds on the nail from liquid and powder and files off. They are not gel polish, which is painted on and cured under a lamp. And they are not all the same: the cheapest are thin, flat, single-layer tips, while the best have a layered, gel-like build with real depth and shine.
What makes one look salon-worthy is three things: the depth and gloss of a gel manicure, a curve that sits on your natural nail bed, and a size that reaches from sidewall to sidewall without touching the skin. Thin tips read as fake at a glance. The sets that pass for a fresh salon visit have that layered build and enough sizes in the box to fit every finger.

Three steps decide how long a set lasts, whatever the brand: prep, application and the first hour afterwards.
- Prep: wash and dry your hands, push back the cuticles, lightly buff the shine off each nail, then wipe with alcohol so the surface is oil-free.
- Apply: pick the size that sits between your sidewalls without touching the skin. With glue, put a thin layer on your nail and on the back of the press-on, place it at a 45° angle just above the cuticle, and press firmly for 15 seconds.
