Classic, Micro or Melt? Types of French Tip Nails

Types of French tip nails: classic, ombre, glazed and chrome. Four hands wearing Loste white French tip press-on nails: Heiress short round classic tips, Soft girl short ombre, Pearl short square glazed French and Diamond Dust almond chrome French.

There are five main types of French tip nails: the classic white tip; the micro French, a fine sliver of white; the French ombre, where the base fades softly into white; the glazed French, a soft tip on a glossy glazed base; and the chrome French, with a pearlescent finish. Shape and length then decide whether the look reads crisp, delicate or modern, and coloured French tips are covered at the end.

Below, we explain how each style differs, which shapes and lengths suit it, and how to make a press-on French look like your own nails. Every set we mention is in our French tip press-on nails collection.

What is a French tip manicure?

A French tip manicure pairs a sheer pink or nude base with a white band across the free edge, the part of the nail that grows past your fingertip. It echoes a clean, healthy natural nail, only more polished. What changes the look is the width of the tip, how sharp its edge is and the nail shape.

What is a classic French tip?

A classic French tip, or white French tip, is a defined white band with a clean edge, the look most people picture when they hear French manicure. It reads crisp and polished, and it suits short nails especially well. Our classic white tips are Glow Up, Trust Fund, Heiress and Powder Room in short lengths, and Duchess in medium almond.

  • Glow Up: short square nails, glossy pink base, classic French tip.
  • Trust Fund: short square nails, a soft rounded tip line on an ultra-glossy nude base.
  • Heiress: short round nails on a nude base.
  • Powder Room: short almond nails, a sleek white tip on a pinky nude base.
  • Duchess: medium almond nails, a white tip on a nude base.

What is a micro French manicure?

A micro French manicure, also called a skinny French, is a very fine white tip, often only a sliver, on a nude base. From a distance, micro French nails look like bare, well-kept nails; up close, the line gives them polish. It is the choice for anyone who finds a classic tip too bold. We don't make a micro French set; for a similarly understated look, choose a French ombre, which has no hard line at all.

What are French ombre nails?

French ombre nails have no hard line. The nude or pink base blends gradually into a white tip, so the French reads soft rather than graphic. Our French ombre sets are Soft Girl, our shortest set, in a squoval shape; High Standards, in medium almond; and Runaway Bride, in long almond.

What is the difference between French ombre and French melt?

Nothing, in most cases. French ombre, French melt and baby boomer nails are names for the same look: the base blends into white instead of meeting it at a line. Our product pages call Soft Girl, High Standards and Runaway Bride French melts; in this guide they sit under French ombre, the name more people search for.

What are glazed French nails?

A glazed French pairs a soft French tip with a glossy, glazed base, the glazed doughnut look in French form. It sits between a classic French and a plain glossy nail: the tip is there, but the shine leads. Our glazed French sets are Pearl and Pretty Privilege, both short with a glazed nude base.

  • Pearl: short square nails with a touch of glitter, glam but still easy to wear.
  • Pretty Privilege: short round nails, ultra dainty, with the prettiest finish.

What are chrome French tip nails?

A chrome French keeps the line of a classic French and adds a pearlescent finish that catches the light as your hands move. It is the dressiest of the white French styles. Our chrome French is Diamond Dust: a bold white tip with a fully pearlescent finish, in a medium almond shape.

Because the tip is bold rather than micro, Diamond Dust reads best when the rest of your look is simple: one statement, beautifully done.

What are the different French tip designs?

Beyond the plain tip, a French can carry a detail and stay classic. Starry adds gold accent nails to a short almond French. Trophy Wife adds a gold stripe to a medium almond French. It Girl adds black polka dots over a classic white tip. Each is still a French manicure first.

What other types of French tip are there?

Nail artists also paint the V French, where the tip meets in a point; the double French, with two parallel lines; the reverse French, with the line at the cuticle instead of the tip; and the side-edge or outline French, which traces the edge of the nail. Our press-on sets cover the classic, micro, ombre, glazed and chrome styles above, with coloured tips at the end of this guide.

What nail shape is best for French tips?

Square shapes give the crispest classic line, because the tip runs straight across. Round and squoval soften the corners while keeping the line simple. Almond curves the tip and makes fingers look longer, which suits micro and ombre styles. Choose the shape you already like on your own nails.

Do French tips suit short nails?

Yes. Short French tip nails are the most practical way to wear the look. Eight of our white French sets are short: Glow Up, Trust Fund, Heiress and Powder Room with a classic tip, Pearl and Pretty Privilege with a glazed finish, Starry with gold accents, and Soft Girl with an ombre.

Should you choose a pink or nude base?

A pink base gives a French its rosy, freshly done look, as on Glow Up and Trophy Wife. A nude base sits closer to your natural nail, so the white tip does the talking, as on Duchess and Heiress. Neither is more correct. It comes down to warmth or a barely-there finish.

If you are unsure, hold the product photo next to your bare hand in daylight. The base that disappears against your skin gives the cleanest French.

How long do French tips last?

A press-on French lasts up to 14 days with our Ultra Strong Press-On Nail Glue, or a few hours to 3 to 5 days with our Press-On Nail Adhesive Tabs. Glue and sticky tabs come in every kit, so you can choose on the day: glue when you want the longest wear, tabs when you plan to change sets sooner.

Each set is made with our 5-layer technology for strength and chip resistance, and finished with ultra-glossy soft gel. For more on wear time, read How Long Do Press-On Nails Last?

How do you make press-on French tips look natural?

Fit is everything. A white tip shows every millimetre of a nail that is too wide, so size each finger carefully before you apply. Every kit has two of each size, with the size number printed under each nail. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller.

Whether you call them press-ons, false nails or stick-on nails, a French is the design that shows fit most.

  • Size first, glue second. Lay out one nail per finger before you open the glue.
  • Prep the nail. Our application guide takes you through it step by step.

How do you take off a French set without damage?

Gently, and never by pulling. Removing a set with care protects your natural nails and keeps the set ready to wear again: every Loste set is reusable up to 10 times. Our removal and reuse guides take you through it, step by step, so the set is ready for its next outing.

What comes in every Loste French tip kit?

Every kit includes 30 nails across 15 sizes, Ultra Strong Press-On Nail Glue, Press-On Nail Adhesive Tabs, a cuticle stick and a nail file, so you can apply your set the day it arrives. No UV lamp needed, and every set is £14.95.

Little beauties. "From ordering the nails to delivery, every step has been seamless and well thought out. Attention to detail is amazing and the packaging is gorgeous. Nails are beautiful and so easy to apply. Will definitely be buying more soon!" A Loste customer, reviewing Pearl

What about coloured French tips?

A coloured French swaps the white tip for a shade, keeping the line of a classic French. It reads most seasonal in autumn and winter, when deeper tips such as black, red and brown come into their own. Every coloured set we make is medium almond, so the colour is your only decision.

French tip FAQs

What is the most natural-looking French tip?

A French ombre or a micro French. An ombre has no hard line and a micro tip is only a sliver of white, so both sit close to a bare, well-kept nail. Our ombre sets are Soft Girl, High Standards and Runaway Bride, and a nude base keeps the look softest.

Are French tip nails acrylic?

They can be. A French tip is a design, not a material, so it can be painted in polish or gel, sculpted in acrylic or worn as press-ons. Ours are press-ons made with our 5-layer soft-gel technology and applied at home with the glue or tabs in every kit, with no UV lamp and no salon appointment.

Can you get French tips on almond nails?

Yes. Duchess, It Girl, Diamond Dust, Trophy Wife, High Standards, Runaway Bride, Powder Room and Starry are almond, and almond is the most common shape among our white French sets. For a short almond French, choose Powder Room for a plain classic tip or Starry for gold accents.

What is the latest French tip trend?

The micro French. Searches for "micro French manicure" are rising in the UK, and manicurists point to fine tips, coloured tips and metallic accents for 2026. We don't make a micro French: for an understated white tip, see the ombre sets above; for shine, the chrome set; and for colour, the coloured tips at the end.

Which French tips suit Christmas parties?

Look for gold or chrome. Starry has gold accent nails, Trophy Wife a gold stripe and Diamond Dust a bold white tip with a fully pearlescent finish. All three sit in our Christmas party nails edit, alongside red and black French sets such as Lollobrigida and Manhattan.
